I'm honored to serve as a County Commissioner representing District 1 in Buncombe County.

The core values of my campaign - equality, community and opportunity - are also guiding my approach to policy issues and decisions. I believe in a politics of empathy and believe that starts at the local level. That means seeing each other as neighbors, treating each other with dignity and respect, and always being ready to listen, even when we don't agree. My faith teaches me to do this and years of organizing for LGBTQ equality across the South have given me ample opportunity to live into this teaching. I believe that every child in Buncombe County deserves an equal opportunity to thrive. But the reality is that one in four kids are growing up in poverty. It's going to take all of us - community members, local government, the business and faith communities - to change that. Expanding access to Pre-K and quality early childhood education is a tested strategy and one my focus areas. Other priority areas include supporting our schools and teachers; creating more living wage jobs, affordable housing and access to public transportation; promoting policies that create equity; and making sure Buncombe County is a leader in sustainability and clean energy efforts.
